A training contract at Ashurst will move your mind beyond technical knowledge of the law. Ultimately, we want to help you become a thought leader with a reputation for clear, perceptive and influential advice – a professional in whom governments and leading businesses the world over can place their trust.
This isn’t an easy route to take. You’ll need to become a shrewd negotiator, have an ability to read both balance sheets and behaviours, and become a commercial strategist with a deep understanding of specific industries.
Our training contract will start you on that road. We will plan closely with you four seats of six months each, that will broaden your world view and hone your talents. At least one seat will be in a finance practice and another within a transactional department. You will also have the opportunity to apply for an overseas or client secondment.
The best way to understand what it feels like to work here is to actually work here. Every year, we hold four vacation schemes – a single one- week scheme in Spring for first year students; two three-week summer schemes and a single one-week scheme in the winter - each designed to give you an intensive experience of our culture and the kind of work we do. We work hard to make sure they're as useful and as stimulating as possible; in fact, we organise the schemes along with a committee of trainees who've been where you've been and know the best way to introduce you to the firm.
Our winter and summer vacation schemes are for all penultimate law students, as well as final year students and graduates, studying a law or non-law degree.
Our first year scheme runs in the Spring. Law students are eligible to apply.
On the winter scheme, you’ll spend one week in one practice area – and on the summer schemes, which are three weeks long, you’ll experience two practice areas. Most students choose to sit in our corporate team, one of our finance teams such as banking or securities and derivatives, or our disputes team. However, you can ask to sit in any of our practice areas.
You’ll learn about our specialist areas by attending workshops. There’s also a chance to get involved in team-building events to experience the way we work together, and social events to get to know our associates and current trainees away from the bustle of daily life.
Early applications are recommended for all programmes as we interview from October to February.
Ashurst do not currently have an apprenticeship scheme.
Salary & Benefits
Salaries for trainees in the first year are currently pegged at £42,000 and £47,000 in the second year. Newly-qualified (NQ) solicitors start at £72,000. Summer and winter vacation scheme attendees receive a weekly allowance of £400 while our first year scheme attendees will receive a weekly allowance of £250.

We will be accepting training contract applications to start in September 2020/March 2021 from 1 October 2017. There will be two windows to apply for training contracts with the firm. These will be from 1 October 2017 to 7 January 2018 and then again from 1 May 2018 to 31 July 2018.
Applications are open between 1 September 2017 and 5 November 2017 for the winter scheme and 1 September 2017 and 7 January 2018 for the summer scheme.
