Gowling WLG is a thriving multinational law firm. With the merger of Canada-based Gowlings and UK-based Wragge Lawrence Graham in 2016, Gowling WLG has continued to flourish, with more than 1,500 legal professionals in 19 cities across nine countries and three continents. The firm were even the official legal advisors for the 2022 Commonwealth games in Birmingham.
Despite this international presence, Gowling WLG still manages to make trainees feel valued and at home, with vacation scheme candidates getting the chance to work directly with clients. Past trainees have praised the firm’s “friendly working environment where the more senior lawyers are approachable” and the chance to “frequently work alongside partners, directors and senior associates alike.”
Corporate responsibility is the name of the game, with the firm placing great importance on protecting the environment, promoting diversity and investing in the community. All lawyers get three days of paid volunteering a year, with the chance to give pro bono advice to charities and mentor GCSE and A-level students. With a variety of different practice areas and chances to undergo client and international secondments, trainees are rewarded well for their work.
Trainees based in London receive a £47,000 starting salary (£33,000 in their other office in Birmingham), while newly qualified lawyers receive £95,000 (London) and £63,000 (Birmingham). This handsome salary is supplemented with benefits including private medical care, £1,000 interest free loan, and an active social club. This doesn’t mean you lose out on a work-life balance, with the firm offering flexible hours and freedom in where you work.
