The AllAboutLaw perspective on Goodwin
With offices across three continents, Goodwin is the dream for anyone who wants to work in a large, multinational law firm. Trainees get involved with large, multinational legal cases, which will help you progress as a lawyer. With lawyers experienced in the financial services, life sciences, technology, real estate and private equity sectors, there’ll be no shortage of cases to get involved in.
Even though the firm is large, its London office only recruits a small annual cohort for their training contract, so you’ll receive plenty of support. During your training contract, you’ll work in small teams, giving you the opportunity to work directly with and be mentored by senior colleagues. The small trainee cohort also means that you’ll receive increased responsibility and plenty of client contact fairly early on.
Goodwin places just as much importance on its corporate cases as it does with its pro bono cases, with the firm serving over 1,000 clients a year. Pro Bono projects include The Neighbourhood Business Initiative, which offers legal clinics, presentations and one-on-one legal advice to low-income small business owners. All employees are encouraged to get involved with pro bono. Each year, the Robert B. Fraser Award is given to a partner and associate in recognition of their impactful pro bono service.
Goodwin's main ethos is that they support those with “aspirations, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a belief that they can contribute to our clients’ success.” If this sounds like you, why not apply for a Trainee Solicitor Programme or Vacation Scheme with the firm?
What the firm says
With 16 offices across three continents, Goodwin is the dream for anyone who wants to work in a large, multinational law firm. But, the firm recruits just 14 trainees annually to its London office, ensuring that you’ll receive plenty of guidance and attention from the firm’s senior lawyers. Past and current trainees have praised the culture at the firm, describing it as “welcoming, ambitious and collaborative,” and “inclusive.” Trainees are also well rewarded with competitive starting salaries, as well as a stellar benefits package, including 27 days of paid holiday and a gym subsidy.
