The AllAboutLaw perspective on Morrison & Foerster

Morrison & Foerster has a global reach, with 16 offices across the United States, Europe and Asia. During your training contract, you’ll be able to work with some of the firm's 1,000 lawyers across the world, collaborating across multiple jurisdictions. The firm provides legal advice to leading technology companies, financial institutions, and companies on the Fortune 100. Pro bono initiatives are also global, with the firm recently securing a landmark ruling that strengthened access to safe abortions in Kenya.

Although Morrison & Foerster is a large, global firm, the support you’ll receive from the team makes it feel much smaller. You’ll receive great exposure to senior lawyers and partners, who have an open door policy, meaning you can speak to them at any time. Past trainees have praised the “approachable” senior lawyers, and the fact that your contributions are appreciated and valued.

The firm is a global leader in the technology, corporate and dispute resolution and finance sectors. Trainees have the chance to complete four six-month seats. There’s not just the opportunity to complete seats in the firm’s core practice areas, but also in their key areas of expertise, of which there’s a wide variety to choose from. Trainees can even develop their corporate or finance experience on a six-month secondment to the firm’s Singapore office.

Diversity and inclusion is key at Morrison and Foerster. The firm’s diverse clientele means that ensuring a diverse workforce is just as important. They encourage applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds, and have numerous affinity groups for those from underrepresented backgrounds. Pro bono work is also highly important to the firm, with the firm recently challenging disability benefit decisions, with a success rate of over 90%.

What the firm says

As a trainee at Morrison and Foerster, you’ll be part of a team of over 1,000 lawyers worldwide. However, each and every one of these lawyers is invested in your success, with past trainees praising senior lawyers as “encouraging and supportive.” With this support, you’ll feel encouraged to take on real responsibility, helping the firm’s reputation as a global leader in the industry. Despite their prestige, the firm’s nickname of ‘MoFo’ reflects the fact that although they are serious about their client’s work, they don’t take themselves too seriously.
