The AllAboutLaw perspective on Foot Anstey
Foot Anstey is the firm for lawyers who aren’t too interested in sticking to the conventional way of life. It’s a firm that aims to value collaboration over convention, and they describe themselves as “refreshingly human.” Past trainees have praised the supportive atmosphere at the firm, commenting that it “really does deliver on its friendly, approachable and supportive ethos.”
While the firm now has 550 people across seven locations and a portfolio of international clients, it wasn’t always this way. Foot Anstey comes from humble beginnings, initially starting out as a high street firm, and growing to one of the fastest growing law firms in the UK. This rapid growth came from hard work and dedication to their clients as opposed to mergers.
Foot Anstey works in a variety of different sectors, ranging from space to islamic finance, and many of the firm's lawyers are leaders in their field. Don’t just take our word for it: the firm recently won a highly prestigious Law Firm of the Year at the British Legal Awards and was recognised on the Financial Times’ list of Innovative Lawyers.
Aside from legal work, trainees get involved in volunteering, with two days of paid volunteering leave every year. The firm even has its own foundation, the Foot Anstey Foundation, which provides yearly grants for local charities. Events like food drives and sponsored walks are held regularly to raise money.
What the firm says
One of the fastest growing firms in the UK, trainees at Foot Anstey get the chance to work with a wide variety of clients. In the past, the firm has advised Silvergate Media company (who own the Emmy winning show ‘Hilda’ and Octonauts via a joint venture) on their buyout by Sony Pictures. Foot Anstey has even launched its own Retail Advisory Board to learn more about how it can best serve the industry, with individuals from Specsavers and Pets at Home.
A small intake of 12 a year allows trainees to get involved in hands-on, real life work as opposed to administrative tasks. Services on offer include dispute resolution and corporate, and there’s also the opportunity for a client secondment. Outside of legal work, the firm is committed to the environment and mental wellbeing, with a paperless filing system and trained mental health first aiders.

With a slogan of ‘powering your ambition,’ Foot Anstey’s aim is to support all people regardless of their race, religion, sexuality, or any other factors. Even during the application, the online form has voluntary questions about diversity, inclusion and social mobility, to help the firm consider your achievements in light of your personal circumstances.
The firm has a Diversity and Inclusion subgroup as part of the partnership board, who help develop the diversity and inclusion priorities for each year. This work is supported by the Diversity and Inclusion action group made up of employees, who generate ideas for events and help contribute to large projects.
These plans are put into action regularly throughout the year, especially during select awareness days aimed at celebrating diversity. Examples include events for Lunar New Year and International Women’s Day.
The firm thoroughly welcomes feedback from employees, and provides an annual survey. Every year, employees provide anonymous feedback on what the firm has been doing well with regards to diversity, and what they could be doing to improve. For their efforts, the firm was accredited for the first time by the National Equality Standard, which aims to assess companies on their strategies to improve diversity.
