The AllAboutLaw Perspective

With a history dating back to 1777, Trowers & Hamlins sets itself apart from competitors with two distinct features: its unusual geographic mix and its unconventional range of practice areas. They have four UK offices and five in the middle and far east. Their practice areas range from charities and social enterprise, to technology, energy and real estate, for which they are particularly well known. Despite their long history, they are able to apply fresh thinking and implement diversity initiatives well, having just won the 'All Star Improvement Award' for recruiting diverse talent and making the most progress year on year in the diversity of their trainee intake. The diversity is also reflected higher up, with 42% of Trowers' partners being female.

There is no specific 'Trowers type', but trainees should be open to innovation and collaboration, both with each other and with clients. The unusual practice area mix means that you could be working on Middle Eastern infrastructure in one seat and private equity deals in another; but whichever seat you choose you will be challenged in a friendly, approachable team. Trainees may also have the opportunity to spend time in one of the firm's Middle East/Far East Offices.

Employees talk of 'feeling valued' and 'part of the 'Trowers' family, as well as the diverse workload and opportunities to visit a Middle East Office. Trainees also valued the firm's real interest in non-legal work experience and the ability to take on real responsibility very early on in their training contract. In terms of the work that Trowers' lawyers do, employees feel that are 'making a difference' and 'having far reaching impact'.
