So excellent is Milbank’s reputation that clients bring the firm their most complex, confident that Milbank will find a solution. Trainees even get the chance to work directly on these vital cases, receiving responsibility from day one.
Although this can sound nerve racking, you’ll receive plenty of support from the firm. Trainees work in small teams, receiving support and guidance from associates and partners. You’ll flourish under first class training and supervision, and the firm’s small trainee intake (eight a year) means you’ll feel like a valued member of the team. One junior lawyer noted that ‘your ideas and thoughts on cases are taken seriously’
Trainees complete four, six-month seats, across any of the firm’s practice areas, which include Capital Markets, Litigation & Arbitration, and Real Estate. Trainees also receive plenty of support when it comes to developing professional skills, with Milbank offering communication, career management and presentation support. A past trainee said that Milbank provides ‘an exceptional level of expertise and support’.
Another thing appreciated by trainees is the firm’s ‘meaningful commitment to diversity and inclusion’. Milbank has a range of network groups for underrepresented communities, and holds an annual Diversity Week spotlighting these groups. Milbank is also particularly passionate about pro bono work, and they are one of a few firms requiring all lawyers to complete 25 hours pro bono work each year.
A small sample of Milbank’s pro bono work includes: helping low-income abused women with divorces and custody arrangements, arguing criminal appeals for the wrongfully convicted and securing financial payment for Holocaust survivors.
