Michelmores is an ambitious, Top 100 law firm, with offices in Exeter, Bristol and London, a turnover of £34m, 66 partners and over 435 employees.  We are already successful, but ambitious to grow and become even more successful.

We recruit to retain and see trainees as the Firm's future associates and partners, and as such are committed to their successful development. We provide excellent supervision, which is what you would expect, but also the opportunity to work with some fantastic clients on great quality work, from a very early stage of your training.

Michelmores really does put its people first: we invest a lot of time in developing and supporting people's career aspirations. We provide the environment, encouragement and opportunities for you to flourish, both personally and professionally. We set the bar high in terms of our expectations, but in return we guarantee to provide you with structured development programmes and clear progression opportunities throughout every stage of your career.

Training Contract

When we select our Trainees, we are recruiting and investing in the future leaders of the Firm. We take that very seriously.

Our structured two-year Trainee development programme focuses on building the technical and business skills that are fundamental for you to become a successful Lawyer. The number and variety of seats available across our offices gives you the opportunity to gain a real breadth and depth of work during your training contract, meaning that you do not feel pressured to select an area of specialism too early in your career.

We are Lex 100 Winners in nine different categories: Job satisfaction, Living up to expectations, Quality of work, Client contact, Low stress levels, Friendliness, Social life, Confidence of being kept on and Diversity. We believe that our commitment and investment in our Trainees is vital to the continuing success and growth of the Firm.

Structure of Training

You will spend six months in four different practice areas and you will be encouraged to spend time in each of our different departments. That said, we are flexible, and will work with you to tailor your training contract to suit your preferences, alongside the needs of the business.  You will be encouraged to spend time in our Exeter, Bristol and London offices.  In each seat you will be allocated a supervisor who will support, encourage and supervise you during your seat with them.  You will also have access to a 'buddy' who will guide you through your training contract and help you feel at home from day one.

The level of responsibility given to trainees is high. You will be running your own files, working in a team on bigger transactions and experiencing client contact on the phone and in meetings, making you an integral part of the team, from very early on.

As well as supporting you through your PSC exams, you will also receive training on financial and business awareness, how to make the most of your training contract, communication and people skills, and marketing and networking. Once your training contract is complete, you will continue to have access to bespoke development programmes and opportunities at every stage of your career.

Vacation Scheme

Our Vacation Scheme is a great way for you to find out what it will be like to work at Michelmores.

We run two one week vacation placement schemes during the summer in our Exeter HQ.  The scheme is as much about you getting to know Michelmores as a place to work, as it is about us getting to know you.

You will have the opportunity to spend time in one department for the week, as we aim to give you a real hands-on insight into one area of law and life as a trainee by attending client meetings and dealing with 'real work'.

You will learn about our different departments and areas of work, and meet trainees, partners and lawyers. There are also informal lunches with trainees, which will give you the opportunity to gain a true insight into working here.

During the week you will take part in a series of assessment exercises, including a verbal reasoning test, a group exercise and an article discussion with a partner. You will also have a formal interview with a partner and a member of the graduate recruitment team.

Although we can't guarantee you a training contract at the end of it, we can guarantee that you won't want to leave us once you have had an inside view into life as a trainee with us.
