Training Contract

A training contract at Simmons & Simmons is made up of four seats, each lasting six months. You’ll submit your seat preferences beforehand, with the only criteria a requirement to complete either one or two contentious seats. The firm’s graduate development team will provide you with plenty of support throughout the process, and will work with you to make sure you gain the necessary experiences.

There’s also the opportunity to apply for a client or international secondment, allowing you to experience legal work from a different perspective and learn about the many different aspects of the legal world. The firm’s international focus also means that you’ll be working with offices across the world, on multi-jurisdictional transactions. While the level of responsibility may feel scary, you’ll receive a great deal of support and guidance from your team and supervisor.

At Simmons & Simmons, you’ll complete your training contract alongside Compass, the firm’s trainee skills academy. Compass runs side by side with the training contract, offering a combination of practical learning, face-to-face workshops and online tools to supplement your experience.

A year before you start at Simmons & Simmons, you’ll have an induction, involving Compass modules to help you learn a bit more about the firm and its aims. This will allow you to feel more confident about the work you’re doing. There will also be a three-week induction programme before your first seat, and you’ll gain access to an online trainee hub. This provides you with a place to share ideas, learn from your colleagues and get vital information.

Throughout your training contract, Compass modules will help you develop the soft skills necessary for legal life, such as time management and maintaining wellbeing. There will even be modules supporting you on your transition from trainee to associated. You’ll feel supported every step of the way.

Vacation Schemes

If you want to learn a bit more about the legal world, and whether law is right for you, why not join a Simmons & Simmons vacation scheme? There is a week-long Winter scheme in London, as well as a two-week Summer scheme in London and Bristol.

During your time with the firm, you’ll gain experience across two departments, and get involved in training, practical work experience and social opportunities. Past candidates have completed research, attended networking events and even attended court.. With the support and guidance of a buddy, you’ll even get the chance to be working on the same legal work as trainees.

There are also numerous social events, which allow you to socialise with your fellow candidates and get to know everyone at the firm. In the past, there have been pizza socials, bowling and an excursion to the London Eye.

Candidates in Bristol are paid £350 weekly, while candidates in London are paid £425.
