Sidley Austin recruits between 12-14 trainees a year, meaning you will get involved in real work from the first day. While this may feel nerve-racking, exposure to real-life cases early on will boost your confidence and allow you to progress faster. Given Sidley Austin has offices worldwide, you’ll get the chance to work with different jurisdictions and clients from all over the world.
Trainees get the chance to complete four seats, each lasting six months each. Examples include healthcare, insurance and MA and private equity. There is also an opportunity for a client secondment, or an international secondment to Hong Kong or Brussels.
No matter what seat you’re in, you’ll be supervised by a partner or associate who will provide you with individual training and personal support. There are also training opportunities on a variety of different subjects.
Sidley Austin has three vacation schemes each year: a week in Winter, two weeks in the Spring and two weeks in Summer. It’s a chance for you to experience what life is like as a lawyer, and you’ll get involved in real work as opposed to just shadowing. In addition, there will be an extensive programme of presentations, workshops and social activities, so you can learn about the firm’s culture and network with senior lawyers. Candidates are paid £500 a week for their work, and are assessed during the scheme for a training contract.
