Why should I study an LLM?

Going on to do an LLM is an ideal way of delving deeper into a specific aspect of law which you’d like to do more academic study in. With the LLB giving you a broad perspective of the foundational subjects of law, it might be the case that you want to specialise in one before moving on to the practical side of your legal training, as you qualify for the legal profession.

Gaining specialist knowledge

If you’re enticed by the prospect of continuing further study and developing your legal knowledge even further, then an LLM is the best option for you. It can open the door to a career in legal academia and research, familiarising you with the experience of further law study and potentially lecturing in the future.

Improving your CV

On the other hand, if you intend to move into practice at the end of the qualification, the LLM can be a great addition to your CV on top of the LLB.

Although it’s not strictly necessary to study one in order to qualify in the legal profession, the LLM will undoubtedly bolster your credentials, particularly in the area that you’ve decided to specialise in. This could be either a general LLM, a Master in Medical Ethics, in International Human Rights, and scores more options.

Gain a global qualification

Another benefit of the LLM is its widespread international recognition, and it can be studied at The University of Law universities around the world, whether in the US or on the continent. Its recognition will open up opportunities to work abroad or in international institutions.

Ultimately, your reasons for studying an LLM will shape what you make of it - it can be a passport for opportunities abroad, a way into legal academia, or a means of improving your CV as you look ahead to a career as a solicitor or barrister.
