Irwin Mitchell is unique, both in its culture and its approach to law. Nationally acclaimed, with strong international capabilities, Irwin Mitchell is one of a few law firms to provide a diverse range of legal services to businesses and private individuals. It has a strong customer service culture and a high level of client retention. The company has a group structure with Irwin Mitchell Holdings Limited sitting above Irwin Mitchell LLP and a number of subsidiaries. It has an established office network with presence in 14 UK locations having merged with southern law firm Thomas Eggar LLP in December 2015.

Main Areas of Work

Personal Legal Services:

The firm remains one of the leading personal injury and medical negligence litigation practices in the UK. It offers a wide range of services covering all the key injury types from road traffic accidents to product liability claims and serious head/spinal injury cases.

A comprehensive range of private client services are also provided, including a national family team with extensive experience in acting in complex financial disputes.

The firm provides will writing services for customers of major financial institutions and private individuals. In addition, it provides a national probate, contentious probate, public law and conveyancing service and is the UK’s leading court of protection practice.

Business Legal Services:

The firm offers a wide range of commercial services. In recent years, it has significantly expanded its corporate, commercial litigation and real estate services.

Private Wealth:

In May 2016 Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth was launched, combining the expertise of Berkeley Law, Berkeley Hurrell, Thomas Eggar and Irwin Mitchell under one single offering to clients.

Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth offers a wide range of specialist services for private clients including succession planning, tax, reputation protection, family and divorce, probate and estate administration and town and country property. It also advises business owners and executives on their personal business wealth including succession planning, tax, intellectual property, business law employment, commercial property and tax.

Training Contract

The firm’s training contracts are streamed so that as a trainee you would either undertake a training contract based within the Personal Legal Services or Business Legal Services divisions. Trainees will have three training seats and a qualification seat. This allows trainees to gain practical experience in diverse areas of law, whilst maximising retention opportunities. Training contract opportunities can be found in the following locations.

The firm is looking for ambitious and well-motivated individuals who have a real commitment to the law and who can demonstrate a positive approach to their work. Irwin Mitchell recruits law and non-law graduates and views social ability as important as academic achievement.

Vacation Scheme

Each summer the firm runs a formal two week work placement which is a great way for you to gain a real insight into what life is like as a trainee at Irwin Mitchell. Whether you are interested in personal legal services or business legal services you will have the opportunity to gain experience in two distinct areas of law. You can let us know in advance of your placement which areas of law are of interest to you. During your placement you will have the opportunity to attend client meetings, social and charitable events, and undertake real client work. You will also get to work alongside your fellow Legal Work Placement colleagues working on a group presentation.

Last year, a large proportion of training contracts were offered to those who had undertaken a Legal Work Placement, so the firm encourages all those interested in joining to apply via this route.

Applications open on 1st November 2018 and close on 15th Janaury 2019.
