Jones Day - Frequently asked questions

Here are a few of Jones Day's most frequently asked questions. Visit their dedicated webpage for a full list.

How many people does the firm recruit as trainees each year?

 Approximately 15 each September.

Am I at a disadvantage if I am studying a non-law degree?

No. Approximately 60% of the firm’s trainee intakes year on year have studied a non-law degree. Often, these candidates can bring a different perspective and interesting skills which can be applied to legal work. Just make sure you can give genuine reasons as to why you want a career in law.

Does Jones Day offer opportunities for first year degree students?

Please come and meet the firm at one of our Events/Open Days at your University, our London office or virtually. You can also complete our Virtual Work Experience Programme with Forage via our website to learn essential legal skills for free, at your own pace. You’ll receive a certificate of completion from Jones Day to enhance future applications.

What qualities, achievements and traits do successful candidates display?

As leaders in cross-border M&A and global disputes, Jones Day looks for extraordinary individuals who are committed to a legal career; want to be challenged on an international platform; and can become part of the firm’s future - not just qualify with them. Half the firm’s London partners trained with the Firm. Successful candidates have obtained or are predicted a 2.1 degree in any discipline; have strong intellectual and analytical ability; good communication skills; and can demonstrate resourcefulness, drive, dedication and the ability to be a team player.

Will it benefit me if I apply before the application deadline?

As Jones Day processes applications as they arrive, the earlier you apply the earlier you would be invited to interview if successful. Therefore, yes, it is advisable to apply as soon as possible after applications open and well before the deadline for your chosen scheme.
