Training Contract

At the beginning of your training contract, you’ll complete a two week induction. During this time, you’ll meet the rest of your trainee cohort, and will begin to build contacts across the firm. You’ll also learn more about life at Gateley Legal and commence your legal skills training, but there will also be several social events to enjoy. Trainees at Gateley Legal complete four, six-month seats. From the first day of your first seat, you’ll receive plenty of responsibility and will play a key role in your team. You’ll even get the chance to work directly with clients, allowing you to develop your client-care and communication skills.

To further support you on your legal career, the firm will also provide you with supervision and mentoring from senior solicitors. You’ll also receive soft-skills development, IT training and technical training from the Learning & Development team, as well as further technical training from the Professional Support Lawyers. Gateley also has its own Professional Skills Course, which is run by BPP University, to help you develop your technical and soft skills. Your progress and performance will be discussed regularly on an informal basis, as well as more formally during your mid and end of seat reviews.

Vacation Scheme

If you are interested in doing a training contract at Gateley Legal, the firm recruits directly from its summer vacation placements. Over two weeks, you’ll get the opportunity to network with the Gateley Legal team, and work out whether the firm is the one for you. You’ll learn more about what a legal career is like, and gain paid, hands-on experience. Past candidates have been given the opportunity to review and draft legal documents, attend client meetings and conduct legal research to help out senior colleagues. All the work you’ll be doing will be for real and current cases, as opposed to “mock” exercises.

During the placement, you’ll collaborate with lawyers across a range of different practice areas, allowing you to explore different areas. You’ll also receive dedicated support from the graduate recruitment team and a trainee buddy, and will even get involved in social events. Socials include lunch with senior lawyers, a farewell lunch, and dinner and drinks with the current trainees.
