Trowers & Hamlins Sustainability

One year ago, Trowers & Hamlins announced their net zero target - to achieve a 50% reduction on their baseline emissions by 2023 and a 90% reduction by 2050. This target is supported by their sustainability strategy and partnership with Achill Management, the organisation behind the Legal Sustainability Alliance (of which they are also a member), who continue to advise on their sustainability journey. The firm have committed to transition to all electric leased vehicles by 2031 and have seen a 30% increase in electric cars in their car fleet since making this commitment.

Trowers & Hamlins is committed to managing their offices sustainably and have reduced their electricity usage by 10% across their UK offices. This has been achieved by rolling out LED lighting; moving to 100% renewable REGO certified electricity; moving away from 24/7 operating hours to better align with their building occupancy. They have also achieved a 15% reduction in natural gas emissions across their UK offices.

As they move into new offices, the firm are also looking much more closely at the sustainability credentials of their buildings, including environmental standards and energy supply, as well as the provision of facilities which support colleagues cycling or walking to work and if there are any charging points for electric vehicles.

Trowers is also thinking hard about how the move to hybrid working can support their net zero objectives, as they look to right size the space required when they move or when opportunities arise where they are staying put.

As well as the above, Trowers & Hamlins have taken steps to reduce their carbon footprint when hiring. For example, they are attending very few university law fairs and they are conducting the early stages of their assessment and selection process virtually.
