Code-switching, culture & confidence: Navigating authenticity in the legal world as a black aspiring lawyer

Featuring:

  • 16:00-17:00
  • Wednesday 29th October
  • Mimi Oluwande, Wedlake Bell; Priscilla Allen, Bevan Brittan; Laolu Elugbaju, Gateley

Join us for an honest conversation about what it means to show up authentically as a Black aspiring or junior lawyer in the corporate legal space. In a profession where ‘professionalism’ is often narrowly defined, Black lawyers can feel the pressure to code-switch, downplay parts of their identity, or overcompensate to be taken seriously.

This event will explore the cultural dynamics of working in predominantly white spaces, the subtle barriers to belonging, and the reality of navigating legal culture while trying to remain true to yourself. Our panellists - lawyers from across the profession - will share real experiences, discuss how confidence and identity are shaped at work, and reflect on how we can build legal workplaces where Black lawyers are empowered to lead as their full selves.

Whether you’ve ever worried about how you present yourself at work, struggled to find your voice in a room, or questioned whether your background would hold you back - this conversation is for you.
