Trainees’ Salaries Now Subject to National Minimum Wage

From 1 August, trainee solicitor salaries will be subject to the National Minimum Wage regulations.

This comes as part of an overhaul of legal education by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) that removes unnecessary and bureaucratic procedures. Other measures include student processes becoming simplified. New law students will no longer need to register with the SRA, saving them a tidy £80.

Additionally, the SRA will no longer create the employment terms of a training contract and they are also introducing a new "equivalent means" application. This means that candidates who can demonstrate they have met the training requirements through other, equivalent experience or qualifications can seek admission as a solicitor.

Julie Brannan, Director of Education and Training at the SRA, said, "We are pleased that we have been able to remove unnecessary requirements.

"The new regulations should free up both students and training providers to get on with the business of ensuring that their courses are of a high standard, without the hassle of needless bureaucracy."
