Court Prevents Child Being Named Nutella

Certainly a contender for headline of the year, this one. A French court has stopped parents from naming their daughter Nutella, ordering the kid to be called Ella instead.
The court said that naming the girl Nutella would make her the target of “derision” (also known as mockery or bullying). “it is contrary to the child's interest to have a name that can only lead to teasing or disparaging thoughts”.
The illegality of names is an interesting one. For example, in Iceland, the name Carolina is not allowed. This isn’t because some ancient Icelandic dictator went by the name of Carolina, it’s simply because Iceland’s alphabet doesn’t contain the letter ‘c’. Additionally, in New Zealand, parents are perfectly within their rights to call their child ‘Number 16 Bus Shelter’ but not ‘Yeah Detroit’. We don’t know either… it all sounds a bit nutty!
