Interview with Sheyda Rimmer, Trainee Solicitor at Addleshaw Goddard

Sheyda Rimmer is a trainee solicitor at Addleshaw Goddard. They have just started my third seat in Corporate, and previous seats include Finance and Financial Regulation.
How did you get your training contract?
I applied directly to the assessment centre.
What's a typical day like as a trainee lawyer?
I start my day around 8.45-9 am with a cup of coffee while I check my emails. I then make a list of all the tasks I need to complete that day and prioritise them based on which are most/least urgent. I usually have internal meetings and/or client meetings to attend, and regular training sessions. The work itself really varies day to day as a trainee, and often depends upon the seat you are in. Common trainee tasks include research, preparing documents to be signed/sent out, assisting with due diligence, and drafting documents. I really enjoy it when I have a chunk of time during the day to draft documents because I can get my head down and really get stuck into it!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy how varied the work is - every day is different and you are always learning!
What are the challenges?
Changing seats every six months can be challenging at times, but it also provides a great opportunity to experience different practice areas and get to know colleagues across the firm.
How has your role developed and what are your career ambitions?
I have learned so much during the first half of my training contract, and have been able to develop and learn new skills. I feel this is reflected in my role, as I am given more responsibility. I look forward to qualifying next year!
How do I get a training contract?
It is really important to tailor your application to the firm you are applying to. Research is the best way to do this, and it doesn't all have to be online - you can attend law fairs and open days, and reach out to current trainees with questions! This will also help prepare you for the interview so that you're ready to answer questions about the firm.
