Diversity at Charles Russell Speechlys

Charles Russell Speechlys is committed to increasing diversity and inclusion within, and beyond, the legal sector. Read more about their initiatives below. 

Charles Russell Speechlys are committed to ensuring that the firm is as inclusive and welcoming as it can be. They are keen to ensure that everyone is receiving the same opportunities and no one is the victim of discrimination.

Currently, the firm is reviewing their selection criteria and procedures to ensure nobody is disadvantaged based on their background or characteristics. More specifically, the firm is aiming to ensure more diversity in their leadership and management positions, and have hired an external consultant to help reach these goals.

To ensure diversity among their trainees, the firm has launched a Career Start Talent Pipeline Programme. This program selects a few Year 12 students from state schools, and provides them with mentoring, skills workshops and work experience for five years. Once students have been accepted onto a university place, they will also receive a £500 grant to assist them with the transition. 

For their current employees, there are a variety of different networks and initiatives in place for those from marginalised groups. Past initiatives have included Trans and Non Binary Inclusion training for staff members working in reception and recruitment, and training several mental health first aiders and champions. 

Charles Russell Speechlys also places great responsibility in celebrating our differences instead of just tolerating them. The firm has held Diwali events across their UK offices, involving traditional treats and dress, henna tattoos and Bollywood dancing. They have also attended Pride marches and held wellbeing weeks.
