Training contract 2022

Our six-seat training contract is designed to provide you with the greatest breadth of experience possible as a trainee. While traditional training contracts normally include four six-month seats, ours includes six four-month placements. This ensures you gain the maximum exposure to our varied practice areas and experience a wide range of contentious and non-contentious work from across our main departments.   

As a trainee, you will be given early responsibility balanced with truly open door support.  From the beginning, you will be learning from lawyers recognised as experts in their fields who are able to offer the advice and guidance you will need to develop into a trusted business adviser.

Winter scheme: Deadline 31 October 2019 

Spring/ Summer scheme: Deadline 10 January 2020  

During the vacation scheme you will have the opportunity to visit two departments of your choice over a two-week period. (one week for winter scheme) The emphasis is on 'real work' and, under the guidance of your supervisor, you will have the chance to attend court visits or client meetings as well as skills sessions run by trainees and solicitors.  In addition to this, there are many social and sports events throughout the placement that offer a real insight into life as a trainee solicitor. 

All our vacation schemes are open to penultimate and final year students from any degree discipline, graduates and those considering a change in career. 

Vacation schemes are part of the recruitment process for trainee solicitors to commence training contracts in 2022 so a keen interest in a career in commercial law is essential.

All participants are offered a training contract interview at the end.


Our legal apprenticeship programme lasts for 2 years and includes both through-the-job and classroom learning.  All the positions will be based at our HQ in Bristol. At the end of the two years you will be awarded a Level 3 Paralegal Apprenticeship and a Level 4 Certificate of Legal Practice, equivalent to the first year of university.  Candidates who prove themselves will be given the opportunity to complete a Level 7 solicitor apprenticeship which will enable them to qualify as a solicitor after a further 4 years of study 

Where will you work:

You will complete one year or six month placements in a variety of legal departments throughout the apprenticeship. This will give you an insight into different areas of law at Burges Salmon and the chance to work with a variety of high profile clients. 

Who you will work with: 

you will be assigned an associate lawyer supervisor within each legal department. They will be responsible for delegating a wide range of work to you and will provide you with regular feedback.

By the end of the apprenticeship you will have developed a wide range of transferable skills and have a thorough understanding of what it's like to work in a top commercial law firm. 

Qualifications/skills required

GCSEs: grades 4 and above are essential. (A to C under the old scoring system). You will need to have achieved at least a 6 in Maths and English (B).

A Levels: BBB or equivalent.

There will be lots of new things to learn and you will need to have strong communication skills, an ability to work in a team and good attention to detail.  More than anything we are looking for people who can demonstrate a positive can-do attitude who are willing to learn and will be committed to this opportunity. 


In addition to a competitive salary of £16,500 you will get 25 days (plus bank holidays) paid holiday each year.  Salaries are reviewed each year.
