Diversity at Goodwin Procter

At Goodwin Procter, diversity and inclusion are key values. They believe that amazing things happen when unique perspectives are celebrated, and when people from diverse backgrounds work together.

The firm has a number of internal organisations working to ensure equality. Their Inclusion Advisory Committee, led by the firm chair, coordinates their diversity and inclusion efforts. The committee brings together leaders from all of the firm's diversity groups: Women@Goodwin, CRED@Goodwin (partner-led Committee on Racial and Ethnic Diversity), Pride@Goodwin and Flex(ability)@Goodwin (ensuring flexible work environment).

Initiatives developed by these committees include: pro bono and charitable support of LGBT equality, cultural celebrations and pride events and unconscious bias education. Employees are given the opportunity to shape the firm’s policies and practices, to ensure they are as inclusive as possible. The firm have frequently received a 100% on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, which assesses their support for LGBT employe

Goodwin Procter are keen to give back to their diverse local community. The firm’s American lawyers played a prominent role in winning the fight for same-sex marriage in the state of Massachussets, and helped it become the first state to legalise same-sex marriage. Their Neighbourhood Business Initiative also recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. It’s a pro-bono programme providing business-related legal assistance to small business owners who don’t have access to legal support. The lawyers supporting the programme work to promote equity, dismantle systemic bias and support wealth creation and typically marginalised communities.

Despite the firm’s extensive diversity initiatives, Goodwin Procter is always looking to progress. They have set ambitious diversity targets for 2025, such as 35% racioethnically diverse and 10% LGBTQ+ senior leadership.
