It is sometimes hard to know how to impress at a law firm open day. Here, we will help you to understand what to expect, how to prepare, and most importantly how you can make a great lasting impression!

What to expect on an open day

Open days are usually made up of a variety of sessions, talks, or workshops. They seek to give you an idea of the law firm’s working environment, culture, and ethos.

You will get the chance to meet trainees, as well as experienced lawyers and associates and learn about the different opportunities available at the firm.

They are usually held at the law firm itself, however, due to the impact of the pandemic, many recent open days have been held virtually. It is a good idea to attend as many in-person open days as possible, as these often include a tour of the offices, which will help you to gain a good feel for the environment and culture of the firm.

How to apply for an open day

Open days are not often as straightforward as simply signing up and being granted a space straight away. It is often a competitive process in which you are required to complete an application form.

The questions on these are often like those for a training contract application and so great practice for the future.

Preparing for an open day

Prior to attending your open day, make sure to research the relevant law firm. A great way of impressing law firms is ensuring you are up-to-date with their recent affairs through articles and news stories as this shows you have a true interest in the firm.

It is also a good idea to prepare a few questions you are keen to ask employees of the firm. Ensure these are carefully thought out.

If you are aware of certain employees that are going to be present at the open day, be sure to read up on them as this will help you to familiarise yourself with them ahead of meeting them in person.

How to impress and make a lasting impact

Be prepared

Ensure you take a notepad and pen so you can make notes throughout the day. By making notes you also show you to the firm that you are really engaging with the open day.

Be on time

While it may go without saying, it is vital you are punctual. Allow plenty of time to arrive and navigate to the appropriate meeting point, even if this means being early.

Your attitude

While simple, your attitude is key to impressing at a firm open day. Be friendly and approachable and ensure you really engage throughout the day to show you have a genuine interest in the firm.

Networking

Connect with employees of the firm on LinkedIn and where possible try to stay in touch with them. Offer your thanks and gratitude for the opportunity of attending the open day, explaining why you found it useful or insightful.

Asking questions

Don’t be afraid to ask questions throughout the day! They could potentially link to the prior research you have done into the firm – for example, by asking about a current structural or business change occurring within the firm or a recent article you have read.

Asking questions about their application process and training contract opportunities and making notes of any helpful tips and tricks can be a great way to prepare for future applications. However, make sure you don’t ask questions which can be easily found online, as this suggests you haven’t done enough research.
