Ofcom is investigating TikTok to determine whether its age verification systems comply with the duties under the Online Safety Act. Currently, the platform relies on age inference, estimating user age by looking at behavioural activity, rather than requiring valid identification. The fear is this approach may be failing to prevent young users from accessing harmful content.
