Overview

Our Spring Vacation Scheme in Edinburgh gives students, graduates and career changers the opportunity to experience life at Burges Salmon through a two week placement. Participants work alongside lawyers on live matters, gain exposure to sectors including energy, infrastructure, financial services and technology, and develop valuable commercial and legal insight.

During the scheme, you'll take part in meaningful work, attend client meetings and team briefings, join tailored skills sessions, and build your network through social events. The programme provides a genuine insight into our collaborative culture, high quality work and commitment to supporting personal and professional development.

The Edinburgh Spring Vacation Scheme is also a direct route to a training contract. Candidates who perform well during the scheme will be invited to a training contract interview on their final day, with the opportunity to secure a place on our September 2029 trainee solicitor programme. Applications close on 5 January 2027, with assessment centres taking place in Edinburgh in February 2027 and a £450 contribution available towards expenses.

Application process

After submitting an application through the Burges Salmon website, candidates are invited to complete two online assessments: an untimed Emerging Talent Assessment, which explores workplace behaviours and decision making, and a timed Critical Reasoning Assessment, which tests analytical and critical thinking skills. Applications are only reviewed once both assessments have been completed.

What we offer you

In addition to gaining valuable hands on experience, successful candidates will benefit from Burges Salmon's supportive and collaborative culture, where wellbeing, inclusion and personal development are a priority. The firm invests heavily in training and development from day one, helping aspiring lawyers build both their technical and commercial skills. Those who go on to secure a training contract will receive a competitive salary with annual progression throughout the programme, alongside a comprehensive benefits package including private healthcare and wellbeing support.

Accessibility

As a Disability Confident Leader, we actively encourage individuals with disabilities, long-term health conditions, or impairments to apply for our roles. We regularly implement adjustments throughout the recruitment process to support all candidates effectively.
