The IGNITE Training Contract: how does it differ from the traditional Training Contract at Clifford Chance?

What is IGNITE?

New technological developments are changing the way law is practised, and Clifford Chance are keen to embrace this innovation. One of the ways they are doing this is with the introduction of a tech-focused training contract IGNITE, the first of its kind in the legal industry. Unlike a traditional training contract which involves four legal-focused seats, the IGNITE training contract involves three legal-focused seats, and one tech-focused seat. At the end of the training contract, you’ll have gained new technical skills and the ability to provide new, innovative solutions to clients.

What does IGNITE involve?

The aim of IGNITE is to give trainees a chance to think about how technology can be applied to one of Clifford Chance’s practice areas. You’ll learn how technology can be used within the department, and how it can solve problems within the legal sector. You can expect to undertake tasks including: drafting and proofing documents, attending client meetings, creating a data room before a major transaction and even running smaller transactions for clients.

In addition to this, you’ll have dedicated time to collaborate with Clifford Chance’s Legal Technology Advisors, who are researching how the firm's future will be shaped by technology. Past IGNITE projects include: delivering training to the firm’s key practice areas, designing and developing tech solutions for global clients, supporting clients as they automate processes or a secondment with one of the firm’s largest tech clients.

How will IGNITE enhance my development?

To ensure the seat enhances your personal and professional development, Clifford Chance will provide you with a range of exciting development programmes. These include: monthly training sessions with internal and external speakers, a personal budget to expand your knowledge and dedicated support from IGNITE Champions. The firm even has its own in-house learning and development facility, Clifford Chance Academy, which provides learning and development support. You’ll even have the freedom to pursue your own projects, and will be assisted by senior staff and practical resources.

How will I be supported during IGNITE?

While the Training Contract is an amazing opportunity and is an invaluable way to start your career, you will face challenges. There will be plenty of support available from the firm, your colleagues and your peers training alongside you. At the beginning of each seat, you’ll receive specialised training in the sector, as well as a dedicated supervisor. The legal support manager and your monitoring partner will be key members of the team, and the graduate development team will always be on hand if needed.
