Do Oasis’ rights Live Forever, or will the challenge hit a Wonderwall?

Episode #9515 October 2026

On the 29th of September, British rock band Oasis and Sony Music applied to the High Court to halt the public auction of an archive containing over 100 hours of unreleased recordings. The archive included 63 live concerts, private conversations, and soundchecks captured off mixing desks by a former sound engineer in the 1990s.

Physical ownership vs underlying rights

Buying a physical object does not grant ownership of the copyright in its contents, as copyright is a distinct property right separate from the medium hosting it. Physical cassette tapes remain distinct from the sound recordings on them. When a former engineer or collector holds physical tapes, lawful possession of physical property does not allow them to distribute, stream, or commercialise the recordings without explicit permission from the rights holders.
