As a hearing was conducted to discuss his possible impeachment, Robert Mugabe - who has been the president of Zimbabwe for 37 years - has submitted his letter of resignation.

This comes one week after military intervention into Mugabe’s rule, under which the army took power from Mugabe. He maintained in the letter that his resignation was voluntary.

Mugabe wanted to establish his wife, Grace, as his successor, rather than subjecting the leadership election to a vote. There has been a chorus of voices calling for the 93 year old to resign, including members of the ZImbabwean public, a former vice-president, and political figures of note within the country.
