Overview

The first step in your career is a vital one. It’s important to get broad experience, acquire a good understanding of the law and appreciate the commercial side of the business. Only then can you decide which area to specialise in.

At Cripps, you’ll carry out challenging and interesting work for a wide range of clients from blue chip household names and entrepreneurial businesses to high net worth private clients. Holiday Extras, Deliveroo, Harrow School, Formula One and Wates Group are just a few of our better known clients.

You’ll experience a wide range of different practice areas covering all aspects of commercial property, corporate and commercial law as well as private client matters. This will give you the diverse experience you need.

Support will be provided throughout your training contract, in a culture that encourages you to:

- care about your work, clients and those around you

- use your imagination and challenge the status quo

- enjoy yourself, developing personal interests in and out of work

- be ambitious in your desire to achieve successful outcomes for you, our clients and the wider community.

We don’t believe in hierarchies. You’ll be encouraged to express your opinions and be yourself. If you’re enthusiastic and tenacious, you’ll have endless opportunities to develop your career and make a difference from day one. This goes beyond training to be a lawyer.  You will get involved in all aspects of Cripps life, where our brand purpose is to ‘be the difference’. This means participating in initiatives such as our wellbeing or EDI group, volunteering on a community or environmental project or carrying out some pro bono work – whatever piques your interest.

Application process

Online application form

The application form will ask you to provide your employment details, education history and details of any work experience.

Online assessment

In the second stage of the process, you’ll be invited to complete a series of online assessments.

This, and all subsequent stages, are designed to help us get to know you better and assess your potential, not your legal knowledge. There will also be questions that help us understand your motivations for applying to Cripps and what attracts you to a career with us. This is your opportunity to show us who you are beyond your CV and demonstrate why Cripps is the right place to start your legal career.

You don’t need any prior legal experience to succeed at this stage. However, we strongly recommend taking the time to research the firm, our values and the work we do. This will help you approach the assessments with confidence and demonstrate your genuine interest in joining us.

Video interview

The third stage includes an on-demand video interview and presentation.

Assessment Day

Candidates who are successful at the video interview stage will be invited to attend our Training Contract Assessment Day. You’ll spend the day at our offices, giving you the chance to experience our culture first-hand and learn more about life at Cripps.

Throughout the day, you’ll take part in a mix of individual tasks, group exercises and a partner interview. It’s also a great opportunity to meet our people, ask questions and get a real feel for what it’s like to be part of the team.

Our Assessment Days will take place on 7 and 8 April 2027.

Vacation Scheme

Following Assessment Day, successful candidates will be invited to attend a one-week Vacation Scheme, which forms the final stage of our recruitment process.

Our Vacation Scheme is designed to provide a realistic insight into life at Cripps and the work of a trainee solicitor. During the week, you’ll spend time with our lawyers, take part in practical legal and business-focused activities, attend workshops and networking events, and gain first-hand experience of our collaborative culture. It also gives us the opportunity to get to know you better and assess your potential in a professional environment.

We will be running two one-week Vacation Schemes during the last weeks of June 2027, and candidates will be invited to attend one of these schemes following a successful Assessment Day.

Following completion of our vacation scheme we will make offers to candidates for either a 2028 or 2029 training contract start date.

Accessibility

We prioritise fairness, inclusion, and accessibility throughout our recruitment process. If there’s anything we can do to support you—whether that’s adjustments during the application, assessment stages, or on the assessment day—please don’t hesitate to let us know.

You can share any requirements directly on the application form, or if you’d prefer a to have a conversation, feel free to contact us at [email protected].

Application rules

All successful candidates will be required to complete pre-employment screening checks. These include:

Verification of your right to work in the UK

Confirmation of your employment history

Validation of academic qualifications and any relevant professional memberships

A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check

These checks are standard practice and help ensure a smooth and secure onboarding process.
