A training contract at Jones Day is a truly individual experience. Unlike traditional training contracts, Jones Day trainees are not assigned ‘seats’. Instead, they have the freedom to seek work across practices, with any partner or team, throughout their two years' training. Our flexible, non-rotational system puts our trainees in control of their career.
How does it work?
Trainees are encouraged to "walk-the-floors" and approach lawyers directly to secure work and will typically be involved on matters with multiple practice areas simultaneously. With this flexibility comes a high level of responsibility – juggling competing demands can be a steep learning curve but we believe this approach produces the best lawyers. Over half of our current partners trained in the same system after all.
The freedom our training system affords works best within a supportive and collaborative environment. Before trainees begin “walking the floors” a comprehensive induction programme ensures they are ready to hit the ground running. The training contract is also supplemented by a dedicated seminar programme to build technical skills, with mentors and regular appraisals providing consistent support every step of the way. The transition from trainee to associate really is a seamless one.
Is it for me?
We believe transparency is key, and recognise that our way of training may not be for everyone. Our trainees have a strong appetite for learning and are keen to push themselves outside of their comfort zone on a daily basis. They are afforded as much responsibility as they desire and seize the opportunity to interact directly with senior lawyers and clients. Whether that’s drafting key documents, joining important meetings or attending court, Jones Day trainees play an integral role to matters across the office, and globally.
Unpredictability is an inevitable challenge our trainees face, so time management is crucial skill. The key to managing our system effectively is constant communication, which also helps to develop relationships with colleagues. As a trainee, you will find lawyers approachable and eager to work with you.
As a trainee, you will:
- Hone your technical skills, learning from many lawyers
- Be involved from beginning to end
- Develop strong client bonds
- Receive well-rounded training
- Experience a seamless transition through to qualification
You won't:
- Worry about the lottery of seat allocation
- Do six months' intensive training in one practice area
- Belong to one partner or supervisor
- Drop an interesting case/deal to move to another seat
The sky really is the limit at Jones Day, no “trainee” tasks, no missed deal closings and no restricted access to growth opportunities. Whether our trainees have their sights set on a particular area of law or they wish to take advantage of the freedom to try their hand at an array of disciplines, Jones Day is built to facilitate choice.
