University Open Days

So you want to go to university to study law? Awesome. Know which university you want to go to? Umm, not so sure. Any ideas for deciding which universities to apply to? Not the foggiest!

Right, don’t panic. There’s still plenty of time to narrow down your choices and having considered league tables, student satisfaction and other things, why not attend some open days?

“But they’re so far away?” Regardless, open days are a must before you go to university. You wouldn’t buy a house in an area you hadn’t checked out before, so why would you even dream of starting university in a city you haven’t visited before?

What’s involved at an open day for law courses?

Once you’ve properly woken up after a ridiculously early start and a four hour car journey, you’ll arrive at a fully packed university car park (joy!) and trudge along to a registration centre. However, it’s not all doom and gloom as after you’ve been ticked off as attending, the real fun begins…

University campus tours

It’s highly likely that any university open day you go to will involve a campus tour. This does exactly as it says on the tin (believe it or not) and will involve a stroll around your potential place of study for the next three or four years. You’ll have a browse around halls of residence, lecture theatres, seminar rooms, the library (or libraries – eek!), the student union, the sports facilities – basically the whole hog!

These tours are most likely to be conducted by a student from the university, providing you with the chance to ask all the questions in the world about what life is like at the university. However, it’s highly likely that you’re far too cool to ask any questions and you’ll leave that embarrassing task to your parents (or some other loser).

Talks – general university & specific to the law course

Open days also provide the prospective law student with the opportunity to attend talks on what life is like at that specific university, student finance and the law course itself. At the end of the day, open days give you an opportunity to get informed about courses, facilities and opportunities. You will also have the opportunity to chat with current staff and students – you may want to know more about the university’s law society for example, or if there are any opportunities to get involved in pro bono work throughout your studies.

Get to know the university city!

When you head off to university, it’s likely to be in a completely new city that you haven’t visited before. So if you have a bit of time left over at the end of your open day, why not head into the city and check out the shopping scene, cafes and bars?
