Birkbeck, University of London, School of Law

Our School of Law is a leading international centre for world-class legal teaching, research and scholarship. We are among the top 10 law schools in the UK and in the top three in London in the Times Higher Education2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) rankings, while our research environment was judged conducive to producing research of the highest quality.

Founded in 1992, the School has grown from 3 members of academic staff to a body of over 30 and a student intake of more than 1000 across two departments – Lawand Criminology. Our academic staff are internationally recognised authorities in their fields, delivering stimulating and relevant teaching in law and criminology, and they play a prominent role in public affairs at home and abroad. We have strong links with the legal profession, attracting academic visitors from leading law firms, chambers and prestigious law schools across the globe.

Ours is an active research culture and we regularly host eminent visiting scholars and organise international conferences and events, including our annual, week-long ‘Law on Trial’ programme of lectures, panel discussions and workshops centred on a different legal theme each year. We host an annual residential weekend for students to participate in discussions, workshops and lectures. We also offer mooting events and mock trials. Mooting will prepare you for real legal practice and Birkbeck has achieved considerable success in national mooting competitions in recent years.

We are also home to the internationally recognised Institute for Criminal Policy Research (ICPR), which contributes to public and political debate about all aspects of the criminal justice system.

We offer both LLB Law and BSc Criminology degrees, available for both full-time and part-time evening study. You will study a wide range of exciting and challenging option modules to complement the core and compulsory modules. Our LLB degree is accredited as a qualifying law degree by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board, and successful completion will qualify you to pursue vocational training, if you wish to practise.

We offer a wide range of postgraduate degrees, including flagship programmes in Human Rights and International Economic Law, Justice and Development, our intensive LLM/MA courses, and our LLM Qualifying Law Degree, which is accredited by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board and will qualify you to pursue vocational training.
