How can I fund the SQE?

How much will the SQE cost me?

The new Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is expected to cost graduates between £3000 and £4500. It might seem steep, but this is a considerable decrease from the £12,000-£17,000 range of undertaking the LPC.

Although compared to the cost of an undergraduate degree it might seem more manageable, it is still undeniably a significant outlay for many people. You won’t be able to finance this cost with a student loan, which is only valid as a means of paying for your undergraduate or masters course, so here are some options you can explore which can go some way towards financing the hefty sum.

Can it be paid for through a training contract?

In the case of the LPC, many law firms will sponsor their trainees’ preparation and fees for the exam, as it is a prerequisite for qualifying as a solicitor and many graduates are recruited a couple of years in advance of starting their placement. However, an agreement should be in place with the firm before you begin the course.

This will also be the case with the SQE, with several firms already announcing that they will cover the cost of the qualification for their future trainees.

Are there any scholarships available for the SQE?

Every year, the Law Society runs a Diversity Access Scheme, taking on the cost of the LPC in order to promote social mobility and diversity in the legal profession. Although no definite arrangements have been announced concerning the SQE, it’s worth keeping an eye out for the scheme in the future, as well as the training contracts that can be secured through it if you are eligible to apply.

More generally, you can look into the opportunities for scholarships and bursaries by the specific provider of the SQE preparation course. Be sure to regularly keep on track of deadlines and requirements to apply for these.

What are my other options?

If these possiblities aren't available, you might want to look at more straightforward ways of funding your SQE exam - for instance, if you haven't taken up a training contract, you can work a part-time job while you study towards it.
