The AllAboutLaw perspective on Shoosmiths

With ten offices across England (and 14 across the UK and Europe), Shoosmiths is the firm for trainees looking for a more regional perspective. This doesn’t mean you’re losing out on top-quality clients though, with the firm counting Mercedes-Benz and Travelodge as two of their long-standing clients.

Trainees can get involved in a large variety of different legal sectors, including litigation services and even engineering law. Whatever the practice area, you’ll be working with experts in the field, who have specialist knowledge in the firm’s numerous practice areas. Shoosmiths have written articles and filmed webinars about the impacts of robotics, cryptocurrency and even using water infrastructure for broadband.

Aside from legal work, trainees are expected to get involved in pro bono activities, with past trainees providing free legal advice at pro bono clinics. In 2019, the firm got involved in 10k races, raffles and auctions to raise money for a charity chosen each year. Trainees have particularly enjoyed bake sales and rubber duck races.

Shoosmiths is renowned for providing their trainees with excellent opportunities for career development. This is sustained by the fact that the firm gives its trainees plenty of responsibility early on, with only one trainee per team. Even those completing a Summer placement get the chance to meet with clients. While this can feel intimidating, trainees have praised the firm’s willingness to listen to everyone’s ideas and its “approachable” culture.

What the firm says

With 1,650 employees across the UK and a recent £167 million turnover, Shoosmiths shows you don’t have to have offices all over the world to make a big impact. Lawyers are passionate about their work, as they are working with a variety of household names, and feel respected no matter where they are based. The firm specialises in a number of different sectors, including private wealth, business and consumer, so you’ll be working with something new everyday. There’s even the opportunity for a client secondment, so you can gain a change of pace and learn about how to best meet client’s demands. Shoosmiths are also incredibly committed to supporting their community, with the firm completing 5,000 pro-bono hours in 2019.
