Penningtons Manches LLP is a leading UK law firm which provides high quality legal advice tailored to both businesses and individuals. We address the specific objectives of each client through our innovative ideas and technical expertise and offer a personal service founded on a strong team ethic.
Today, we’re based in London, Basingstoke, Cambridge, Guildford, Oxford, Reading and San Francisco, with 110 partners and 600 people in total. Our main areas of practice are dispute resolution, corporate and commercial, real estate, private client and family.
We also have several multi-disciplinary teams concentrating on a variety of industry sectors, including technology, life sciences, education, social housing, retail and international wealth. In these areas, we're acknowledged for our unparalleled market insight.
We have a broad international focus supported by well-established links with law firms throughout the world. Penningtons Manches is a member of Multilaw and the European Law Group, networks with representatives in over 70 countries, and many of our lawyers play leading roles in various international bodies.
Our clients range from private individuals, owner managed businesses and start-ups to multi-national corporations, public companies, professional partnerships, banks and financial institutions. We are conscious that our culture and close relationships with our clients are vital assets and we are determined to maintain these as we expand.
You'll be given a thorough grounding in the law, spending four six-month seats in the various practice groups within the firm's main business divisions; business services, private individuals and real estate. We ensure trainees gain a broad experience during their training contract to avoid too specialised an approach before qualification. We believe in introducing trainees to challenging cases. We recognise the value of giving trainees responsibility and allowing direct contact with clients. However, our experienced solicitors are always ready to give support.
Penningtons Manches offers training contracts in London, Basingstoke/Reading, Cambridge, Guildford and Oxford. Trainees become immersed in the work and culture of their own office, but come together with the trainees from all offices on a regular basis and with the whole firm at the firmwide sports and social events.
The training contract begins with a formal induction which provides trainees with an overview of Penningtons Manches, its areas of work and general office, accounting and compliance procedures. You will also receive training in IT, drafting, dictation, business development and legal research.
Regular formal training sessions specifically for trainees are provided throughout the training contract. In addition, each department holds its own training sessions, and trainees are encouraged to attend these and get involved. In addition, the PSC is provided.
A seat supervisor ensures allocation of adequate and challenging work and monitors performance. Additionally first-year trainees are paired up with a buddy (a second-year trainee) and a mentor (a partner or senior associate). Regular appraisals and feedback sessions ensure that the trainee is aware of his/her progress and areas which require improvement, future objectives and work/training plans.
A one week paid placement programme is offered in London, Basingstoke/Reading, Guildford and Oxford during July. Interns spend time in one of the firm's practice areas to get an idea of life as a trainee at the firm.
The vacation scheme is open to only those candidates who are planning to take up a training contract in two years’ time.
Information Days are conducted in the Easter Holidays. They are primarily aimed at first year law students and penultimate year non-law students interested in a career in law. Over the course of the day you will be involved in seminars, panel discussions and interactive sessions which will hopefully help confirm if a career in law is for you. You will meet with a wide range of employees from partners to trainees and understand their reasons for joining the firm, graduate recruitment will also be able to give you some information on how to apply to our schemes and some hints and tips on how to stand out from the crowd.
Penningtons Manches occasionally have apprenticeship vacancies. Please check the firm’s website for current vacancies.
