The University has won a prestigious national award for its contribution to 'pro bono' work across the North East. The Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education was awarded for the exceptional work of our Student Law Office, which operates like a solicitor's practice, providing huge benefits to both local community and legal education. If you enrol on the LLB/M Law (Exempting), Legal Practice Course (LPC) or Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) you will have the opportunity to try out legal practice for real through the Student Law Office. You will be advising and representing members of the public under the supervision of qualified members of staff and may even need to represent your client at court or tribunal. You’ll develop professional transferrable skills including research, public speaking, commercial awareness and team work, qualities that are highly regarded by both legal and non-legal employers.

Northumbria Law School is renowned for its unique undergraduate programmes and ground-breaking ‘Law Plus’ programmes, enabling students to secure a Qualifying Law degree while specialising in areas such as business or international business.

Learn from industry professionals

Our tutors are continuously commended on their excellent level of teaching and support as you’ll be taught by experienced academics and legally qualified staff.  We have close links with the local Bar and the North East circuit, so you’ll benefit from additional sessions, talks and mock trials that are delivered by Judges and specialists in particular areas of law and legal practice. You’ll receive careers support through our Student Engagement Centre that provides regular interactions and sessions throughout your study promoting opportunities in volunteering, internships, placements, overseas study and law clinics. All of which have a very positive impact upon student employability.

Student Law Office

Our Student Law Office is a multi-award winning pro bono legal service whereby students from the Exempting Law Degree, Legal Practice Course or Bar Professional Training Course offer free legal advice and representation to members of the public under the close supervision of qualified lawyers. The students, who participate in the Student Law Office benefit from working directly with clients, develop their legal knowledge, skills and professionalism and gain credit towards their academic or professional programme of study.

Northumbria Law School provides a suite of law related programmes to help you achieve your goal of becoming a successful legal professional. From the traditional LLB (Hons) route through to our innovative M Law Exempting degrees which allows students to achieve a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD), a Masters level qualification which allows you to enter the legal profession at trainee solicitor level. We are the only university in the UK to run the LLB (Hons)/M Law Exempting (Bar Professional Training Course).

We also provide suite of Law + courses which is a range of specialist law degrees designed to develop the knowledge and understanding of the inter-relationship between law and an additional area of study, such as Business or International Business.

Professional courses

Whether you are a graduate in law or a graduate from another discipline we offer a range of courses and flexible modes of study to help you achieve your goal of becoming a successful legal professional.

We are a leading provider of the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) for non-law graduates looking to practise law and the Legal Practice Course (LPC) for aspiring solicitors.  We are also only six institutions outside of London to provide the Bar Professional Training Course (PBTC) and we offer an unrivalled range of Masters programmes via a flexible distance learning mode of study, designed for busy professionals or those with personal commitments.
