Professional Law at UWE Bristol.

With more than forty years’ successful delivery of professional legal education, a strong national and international reputation and established links with both the legal profession and business, we are widely recognised as one of the leading providers of professional legal education in the UK.

We offer flexible study, a choice of timetabling options, superb facilities and are large enough to provide a range and depth of quality provision. Our GDL / LPC and BPTC courses are designed and taught by experienced solicitors/barristers teaching within their own subject areas. The emphasis is on practical learning within a supportive environment and on providing students with the skills/ knowledge to ensure they are ‘practice ready’.

We have a reputation for excellence and for delivering courses of the very highest quality, giving you a foundation for a career in Law that is hard to match.

Enhancing your employability

We are dedicated to supporting you and your personal career aspirations. If you have not secured a training contract or pupillage, we will work with you to achieve your goal. The course directors and tutors work with UWE Bristol Careers Service, regional legal employers and recruitment experts in order to put you in the best position when applying for legal employment, preparing you for your entry into the legal profession.

Placement scheme

For our GDL and LPC students, we offer a work placement scheme during the Easter/summer holidays. This is run in conjunction with member firms of the Bristol Law Society, involving over twenty law firms.

Pro Bono work

Pro bono work is a great way of learning how to provide law-related advice and, in some cases, being involved in live case work. These experiences improve the professional and educational standards of our graduates, whilst assisting the local community. The Pro Bono Unit at UWE Bristol has a number of strands including the Community Legal Advice and Representation Service and Community Action.

Mediation training

We have teamed up with the Alternative Dispute Resolution Group (ADRg) to provide an exclusive

five-day introductory course in mediation, taught by specialists in the field. ADRg is acknowledged

nationally and internationally as a leading authority in mediation and other dispute resolution techniques.

Guidance and support

Personal tutors

Every student is allocated a personal tutor, who will provide one-to-one guidance on career development. There is also a dedicated Careers Tutor to help advise you, as well as “Ask the Experts” careers events, which allow you to put questions to experts in a diverse range of legal careers.

Supervising Principles (SP)

Students on the LPC are assigned a Supervising Principal (SP), who will give you the support a senior lawyer might give a trainee solicitor in practice. Your SP will help you through the process of applying for training contracts, backed up by a specialist LPC Careers Tutors, who can help with applications aimed at specific sectors of the legal market.

Events and networking opportunities

We offer a fantastic variety of events throughout the year which are often led by Bristol or regional legal practitioners including;

Regional Law fair - with a focus on law firms, chambers and legal services providers with a Bristol or regional presence.

Meet the Employers fair - featuring around 80 employers from a broad range of business sectors.

Regular talks and presentations-  from those who work in legal practice (including many former students) providing invaluable advice, together with placement, work experience and mentoring opportunities.

Distinguished Executive Address events series - gives you the opportunity to hear from business leaders from a broad range of professions.
