Institution Profile

The Department of Law at Bournemouth University has a long tradition of offering high-quality legal courses that prepare you for the world of work and enable you to specialise in an area of law that suits you.

Why BU?

If you want to qualify as a lawyer or need to build a legal knowledge of the commercial aspects of business, BU has the course for you. As well as being one of the UK’s leading institutions for postgraduate study in intellectual property, we have extensive expertise in commercial law, international tax law and international public law, amongst others.

To ensure you get the most industry-relevant degree, we work closely with accreditation boards and legal professionals to ensure the course content reflects the needs of the industry. Our courses are accredited by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Bar Standards Board (BSB) which means that you will graduate with a Qualifying Law degree.

Learning from our research-active staff can broaden your understanding of and experience in a particular legal field, enhancing your employment prospects and helping you develop as a legal professional. Our world-renowned Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management CIPPM currently pursues research in the themes of business law, intellectual property law, property law, and taxation. In addition we have extensive expertise in human rights, international and domestic criminal law, and company law. Our re-search outputs help to inform our teaching as well as the academic community.

“My teaching, and that of my colleagues, is very much informed by research. I’m able to reference examples, case studies and publications I’ve been involved with. Students here have the advantage of being part of a very active research community – where we regularly have guest speakers, conference, seminars and workshops – and one that has excellent links with major research centres all over the world. But at the same time, our community within BU is quite small, so you can still create individual relationships.”

Professor Maurizio Borghi, Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management.

Postgraduate courses in Law

The Department of Law

Our Department of Law was established over 25 years ago and we consistently strive to improve the student experience, giving you extensive work experience opportunities and exposing you to our thriving legal research community. Careers, employability and placements .

We offer non-law graduates the opportunity to complete the first stage of training approved by the law professional bodies to convert a non-law degree into a Qualifying Law Degree, through the Graduate Diploma in Law, CPE. Completion of the GDL/CPE guarantees a place on our Legal Practice Course (LPC), which is the second stage of professional legal training enabling you to become a solicitor.

The LLM Intellectual Property and PG Cert Intellectual Property have been developed in collaboration with the Joint Examination Board of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys, and are accredited by the Intellectual Property Regulation Board. They also provide exemptions from the foundation exams necessary for Patent Attorney qualifications and additionally, for the PG Certificate, Trade Mark qualifications.

The LLM International Commercial Law draws on our academic excellence in Commercial Law, Corporate Law, International Economic Law, Intellectual Property Law and Tax. A challenging and stimulating course, it is suitable for a wide range of career paths within global companies and/or the legal profession.

The LLM International Tax Law is aimed at individuals wishing to pursue a career in taxation, whether in compliance, administration or advisory roles. You will study a wide range of tax and law modules which are not focused solely on UK tax law, so applications from international students are encouraged.

LLM Public International Law caters for those working in, or pursuing a career in international legal firms or as international legal consultants, governmental organisations, international organisations, international non-governmental organisations. Public international law has increased in use and relevance vastly over the twentieth century, due to a globalised world with an upsurge in global trade, environmental concerns, human rights violations, armed conflicts and a boom in global communications. You will, therefore, benefit from the study of law in these areas and under the direction of experts in this field.

Funding

We recognise that postgraduate study is a financial commitment and it can be a decisive factor in your decision-making; however qualified graduates have a higher probability of achieving a training contract or graduate job earning significantly higher wages. BU offers a range of scholarships, which enable you to invest in your future. Review the funding information on our website.

Research

The Department of Law has research excellence in Human Rights and Criminal Law, Company and Commercial Law and Intellectual Property Law, and is home to the internationally recognised Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management (CIPPM).

Expert analysis and opinion from the CIPPM regularly appears in the mainstream media, with contributions to The Guardian, The Independent, FT, BBC Radio and Sky News.

Resources and facilities

Our postgraduate law students study at our modern Executive Business Centre with state-of-the-art lecture theatres and learning facilities, located on our Lansdowne campus in the centre of Bournemouth. This contemporary building offers individual study areas, techno booths and breakout zones for informal discussion and group-work. It also boasts an i-library (a paper-free resource facility where all study materials, books and journals are available electronically) and an exclusive LPC library, which replicates a legal practitioner’s library and is well stocked with printed texts and materials that a solicitor would use in practice.

Our law students have access to an extensive range of facilities across both our campuses as well as our virtual learning environment, myBU; a learning website giving access to online learning materials and discussion groups.
