Northumbria University has been awarded a prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for the exceptional work of its Student Law Office, which operates like a solicitor’s practice, providing huge benefits to both local community and legal education. Northumbria Law School is No.1 for percentage of law graduates in professional employment in England (DLHE Survey 2012).

The GDL Programme

The Graduate Diploma in Law is a full-time 1 year or 2 years distance learning conversion course aimed for any non-law graduate who intends to become a solicitor or barrister in the UK.  The GDL is an essential step for non-law graduates who wish to progress down either of these career paths and on successful completion of the course students will progress to the Legal Practice Course (solicitors) or Bar Professional Training Course (barristers).

Northumbria’s GDL is taught using a practical, student focused approach providing a solid grounding in the major areas of law. It covers the foundations of legal knowledge which are taught by means of lectures, group sessions and seminars. Students are provided with comprehensive study materials, textbooks and step-by-step workbooks to support their studies.

At the beginning of the programme students are required to study the English Legal System by means of a pre-attendance package and induction programme.

In addition, students must study the following seven subjects, which are stipulated by the professional bodies as being the foundations of legal knowledge:

  • Contract Law
  • Criminal Law
  • Equity and Trusts
  • European Union Law
  • Property Law
  • Public Law
  • Law of Tort

All students are required to undertake research into a further area of law. Northumbria Law School offers a range of options including; Company Law, Employment Law, Family Law, Evidence and Legal History among others. Students receive initial guidance on the subject and advice on how to conduct legal research.

Students who have successfully completed the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) within the past five years are eligible to convert their Diploma into an LLB (Hons) degree by either part-time or distance learning (open learning) study. This requires the study of either two additional legal subjects or the submission of a project of 10,000 – 15,000 words on a legal subject chosen from the following list:

  • Company Law
  • Employment Law
  • Evidence
  • Family Law (available on a part-time evening basis only)
  • Intellectual Property Law (available by open learning only)
  • Medical Law

The GDL course is regulated and approved by both the Solicitors Regulatory Authority and the Bar Standards Board.

Successful GDL students who continue to study at Northumbria are guaranteed a place on the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and are entitled to a substantial discount off the LPC or Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) fees.
