Founded by twin brothers in 1896, Simmons & Simmons has grown into a vast, multinational law firm, where employees frequently work with high profile clients on deals worth millions of pounds. Recently, the firm successfully defended Barclays against a £1.8 billion deceit claim from the 2008 financial crisis. The case was eventually listed as one of the most significant cases of the year in The Lawyer’s Top 20 cases of 2020.

The firm’s specialties include financial institutions, asset management/investment funds, healthcare and technology, media and communications. Whichever specialty you’re working in, you’ll be working with experts in the field, collaborating with offices across the world and learning more about different jurisdictions. Opt for a client or international secondment and you’ll learn about law from a completely different perspective, making you a more well-rounded lawyer. 

Simmons & Simmons’ Compass programme allows for a unique training contract experience. A year before you even begin your training contract, you’ll complete an online induction, which will allow you to get to know more about the firm, its goals, and the kind of work you’ll be doing. This will be supplemented by a three-week long introductory programme just before you start, and an online trainee hub where you can liaise with your colleagues. This ensures that you’ll receive plenty of support.

When you’re not working, there’s the opportunity to get involved with the firm’s numerous diversity networks. There’s also numerous sports and social clubs, ranging from netball and yoga to a choir. You’ll get the chance to connect with like-minded people, or perhaps discover a new hobby.

The firm recently advised Adherium, a digital health company, on a device designed to track how often asthmatic patients use their inhalers, and advised Telefonica on an agreement with Sky involving next-generation 5G services. 

The firm itself even started its own research project, analysing the impact of robots and artificial intelligence on healthcare. When you’re not working on futuristic, high-stakes projects, there’s also opportunities to get involved in pro bono work. The firm’s Access to Justice programme helped migrant workers in Asia to claim damages for injuries, and over 250 people in the UK with disability appeals. Simmons & Simmons has even worked with charities like Macmillan and the British Red Cross as part of their pro-bono initiatives.
