Tweeting allowed in courtroom
- 31st December 2010
Tweeting is now permitted in court after a landmark ruling from the Lord Chief Justice after pleas by journalists at the bail hearing of Julian Assange, the Wikileaks founder.
Lord Judge gave no objection and allowed live text-based communication including tweeting via social networking site Twitter – so long as it did not interfere with the administration of justice.
In his ruling, he said: “The use of an unobtrusive, hand-held, virtually silent piece of modern equipment for the purposes of simultaneous reporting of proceedings to the outside world as they unfold in court is unlikely to interfere with the proper administration of justice.”
He issued interim guidance to govern the use of tweeting, as well as mobile, e-mail, and other social media to be implemented with immediate effect but the guidance will be kept under review.
