  • Tough market for trainees

  • 26th April 2010
  • Another day, and yet another survey published confirming that the legal trainee jobs market is tougher than ever before.

  • The latest survey by cvmail, the Thompson Reuters internet recruiter, contacted 900 graduates applying for training contracts, out of which 39% of law students had been forced to apply for jobs outside the legal profession.

Aspiring lawyers feel they are being forced to cast their nets wider – with banking and finance, and the public sector top on the list of alternatives careers.   But the same graduates are applying to more firms than they did in the previous year with 18% applying to more than 20 law firms.

The results reveal 15% of graduates expect to work more than 55 hours each week in 2010 and 35% expecting to work more than 50 hours a week.  The EU Workings Hours Directive limits the working week to 48 hours but trainees are often expected to opt out.
