Student loans debacle continues

As tens of thousands of students face Christmas still waiting for their student loans to materialize, the Student Loans Company has faced fierce criticism for a “conspicuous failure in key areas” in an official review.
The SLC chairman’s assurance of plans to include “strengthening and restructuring the senior management team” is not much comfort to students still waiting for their loans and grant payments. Some students are being forced to drop out and others are paying for their accommodation and living expenses on credit cards.
An official review has already noted that the long delays have a far-reaching impact on students as the SLC struggled to keep up with the demand. The SLC took over the job of processing applications from local authorities for the first time this year.
Three quarters of universities are also reportedly handing out hardship grants to students who are still waiting for their payments.
