SRA starts legal education review
- 15th January 2011
The jointly commissioned review of legal education in England and Wales is imminent with the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority inviting expressions of interest.
The review is commissioned by the main legal regulators including the SRA, the Bar Standards Board and the Institute of Legal Executives Professional Standards (IPS) and aims to ensure that the ethical standards and levels of competence of those providing legal services in regulated law firms are enough to secure a high standard of service for clients, to support the public interest and the rule of law.
The successful contractor will research, analyse and report on the current legal education and training system. Antony Townsend, Chief Executive of the SRA, says: “This is a major collaborative project involving a fundamental review of the legal education and training requirements by all three regulators, to ensure that we have a system which is fit for purpose as well one which is flexible and responsive to a changing market.
He adds: “Ultimately, we are looking to fulfil the objectives set out in the Legal Services Act to have a legal education and training system which protects and promotes the interests of consumers and will create an independent, strong, diverse and effective legal profession.”
