  • Solicitor MPs

  • 30th April 2010
  • If you fancy a political career as well a legal career, you’re not alone.  According to the Law Society, there are more than 20 constituencies nationwide in which a solicitor is likely to be elected as MP at next week’s general election.

  • With more constituencies than usual up for grabs after the fall-out from the expenses scandal, solicitors are standing as candidates from firms as diverse as city firms Herbert Smith and Travers Smith; major Birmingham firm Wragge & Co and smaller firms including Byrne & Partnres in London.  They include Jonathan Reynolds, a trainee solicitor at Addleshaw Goddard, in Manchester who is standing as Labour candidate for the Stalybridge and Hyde constituency.

The election could result in the Conservative’s first black female MP, if solicitor Helen Grant is elected; and mixed- race Labour party candidate Chuka Umunna for the Streatham constituency,  has been dubbed ‘Britain’s Barack Obama’.
