Sixth formers not put off by higher fees
- 22nd September 2010
A drastic hike in university tuition fees is not putting off sixth formers from their aspirations to go to university meaning demand for undergraduate places may not decrease.
According to a survey by the University of Leicester, nine out of 10 teenagers say they would still apply to university - even in fees were to double.
However, poorer students would be more likely to be deterred from applying. Researchers, who spoke to 730 sixth formers, also found that new universities were more likely to lose applicants if fees were to rise: if fees were to rise to £7,000 three in five potential applicants would re-consider applying to a new university.
The report of Lord Browne's review into the funding of higher education and how much students should pay is expected shortly.
