Qualifying Law Degree fit for purpose?
- 20th October 2009
The Law Society is seeking the legal profession’s views on the quality of the existing Qualifying Law Degree (QLD) but the deadline of 29th October is looming. The consultation comes after a number of concerns were expressed concerning the quality of incoming trainees and newly qualified solicitors.
A QLD degree is a law degree recognised by the Law Society and the Bar Council and it gives the graduate exemption from the first stage of the legal professional examinations - but does not include all law degrees. The QLD must meet certain conditions and cover specified core subjects.
The Law Society’s Joint Academic Stage Board is expected to start work later this year to discuss the issues raised - but the Law Society says that strong indication from the profession as to what changes should be made to the academic stage of qualification would be needed.
