Qualify without a training contract
- 30th March 2011
Northumbria University has been approved by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority to run a course which allows students to qualify as solicitors in five years rather then the usual six years.
The five year trial combines work based training with study, shaving a year off the usual six year training period potentially saving students thousands of pounds in fees. The course will exempt students from the LPC which can cost up to £10,000.
However, there are concerns that the course will lead to a group of students without jobs as firms may be reluctant to take on solicitors that have not undertaken a traditional training contract.
A spokesman from AllAboutLaw said, "it's an interesting initiative and it's great that it may save students thousands. Hopefully, the scheme will be a success, but ultimately the success will be determined by the firms who take on the Northumbria graduates. We look forward to seeing how the trial is received."
