  • Proposals for law students to plug legal aid gap

  • 12th October 2011
  • The Scottish Government is considering proposals for law students to provide free advice to individuals seeking legal aid as they try to find a way to address a surplus of over £20 million.

  • It has been suggested that students could give advice on civil cases rather than criminal ones via various existing ‘Law Clinics’ at several Scottish universities. The students would work for free in delivering this service.

The government is also looking at ways of encouraging the use of “no win, no fee” services as part of a raft of proposals to address the budget imbalance. The consultation continues.
