  • Pro Bono Student Award Winners Announced

  • 31st March 2011
  • Students and law school staff from across the UK gathered in the House of Commons on Wednesday to be recognised for their outstanding achievements in the field of legal pro bono work.

  • The annual LawWorks awards were once again endorsed and presented by the Attorney General, Dominic Grieve QC MP.

    The winners were as follows:

    • Best Contribution by a Law School – University of Kent
    • Best Contribution by an Individual Student – Alasdair Stewart (University of Strathclyde)
    • Best Team of Students – BPP Law School Streetlaw Homeless Team
    • Best New Pro Bono Activity – University of the West of England Domestic Abuse Service

The occasion coincided with the publication of LawWorks’ latest report into student pro bono across the UK.  The report was the result of the three year project, funded by the Law Society.  It shows that the number of law schools offering pro bono activities has risen by over 41% since LawWorks’ previous report in 2006.  With so many law schools engaged it is hardly surprising that the quality of the award winners remains so high.

The Awards were again generously sponsored by legal information provider, LexisNexis.  Alasdair Stewart, the winning individual student, was thrilled when LexisNexis offered him the chance to take a trip to Canada in order to gain first-hand experience of pro bono activity on the other side of the Atlantic.

The Attorney General, Dominic Grieve QC MP, said: “These awards celebrate a group of law students who in spite of their busy academic or postgraduate studies have shown a strong commitment to pro bono work.  By doing so they are continuing one of the finest traditions of the legal profession.”
